Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee was a controversial leader in modern Indian history. He was a leader of Hindu Mahasabha and founder of Bharatiya Jana Sangh ( precursor of BJP ) . He was also the son of Sir Asutosh Mookerjee. There are some facts which are unknown to many Indians including the people of his home state, West Bengal. We know that Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee and the Bose Brothers ( Subhas Chandra Bose and Sarat Chandra Bose ) had different ideologies, but still, Dr. Mookerjee had helped the Bose family despite ideological differences.
When Dwijendranath Bose, son of Satish Bose ( Subhas’s eldest brother) was in Alipore Jail, his elder brother, Ganesh Bose died due to cerebral apoplexy .
The Bose Family members ( especially Sisir Kumar Bose ) were trying to get Dwijen out from jail by the Government’s Permission. But they weren’t allowed.
Fazlul Haq , the then Prime Minister, also couldn’t do anything to get Dwijen out from Jail.At last, Sisir Bose telephoned Syama Prasad . Mookerjee asked the Addl. Home Secretary, Richard Tottenham to bring out Dwijen. They were unwilling. But Mookerjee kept on saying – ‘This has to be done’ .After a tug of war, Dwijen was allowed to be taken to the cremation ground under heavy police escort.
This information is very rare. But we must know it. Due to Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee’s efforts , Dwijen was allowed to go to the cremation ground for once to see his dead brother .
