” The first Gods to worship are our own countrymen ” – Swami Vivekananda
When we think of spiritualism, the first name to strike our mind is of Swami Vivekananda aka Swamiji. He was a great Indian monk who was the first person to spread the ideals of Hinduism and to make people know about this religion. I believe Spiritualism in the way of Swamiji and Patriotism in the way of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose is the best combination for a man who want to lead a pious life.
Swami Vivekananda, born Narendra Nath Datta, was one of India’s foremost religious philosophers. Known for his humanistic approach to the Vedas, the sacred texts of Hinduism, Vivekananda provided a window to the West to access the religion. He was a proponent of the Vedanta philosophy in the United States and England, and appeared as a spokesperson for Hinduism at the World’s Parliament of Religions at Chicago in 1893.
The audience was captivated by Vivekananda; one of the accounts described him as “an orator by divine right and undoubtedly the greatest figure at the Parliament” . After his return from United states of America in 1897 , he founded the Ramkrishna Mission near Belur , on the banks of Hooghly river.
” I am proud to belong to a religion which has taught the world both tolerance and universal acceptance. We believe not only in universal toleration, but we accept all religions as true. I am proud to belong to a nation which has sheltered the persecuted and the refugees of all religions and all nations of the earth ” said Swamiji at the World’s Parliament of Religion in 1893.
Nowadays, there are political parties which are playing with his name. It must not be done. Swamiji believed in Unity among the people and not a separate state for a community. Swamiji is needed today to make the present generation know about our past. The present generation must know about the persecution and sufferings our religion had faced during the invasions of various Islamic rulers. The people of India must know about the superiority of Hinduism in the fields of Arts, Architecture, Science, Technology etc. Today, India must know about its glorious past which can be best said by Swamiji. Today, when the people of higher caste have problems with the lower class, we must remember the quote by Swami Vivekananda, where he said – ” Say at the top of your voice, the naked Indian, the illiterate Indian, the Brahmin Indian and the pariah Indians are my brothers ” . We must be living unitedly for a better future.
Many of us know that, Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose’s spiritual guru was Swami Vivekananda. Subhas also belived in Swamiji’s ideals. He was inspired by the stirring speeches of Swamiji during his days of youth. Swamiji’s stirring speeches must be heard and read till today for a determined and focused goal of life. We need to follow the ideals of Swami Vivekananda for a better future of our society. Swami Vivekananda till today remains an inspiration for youth. Swamiji till today remains an inspiration for every Indians irrespective of religion, caste, creed etc. The youth of India must strive to spread his ideals too so that the society may be able to choose between the right and wrong path.
The political leaders must not say that he wanted a separate state for a religion. He wanted Unity among the Hindus and to spread the Vedic sense among the Indians. Swamiji reminds us of ‘ Karma’ . We must do our work with a determination and we will get a good result.
I would end my essay with a short quote by Swamiji – ” Arise, awake and donot stop until the goal is reached ” . Yes. Youth of India awake, people of India awake, awake so that we may work for the betterment of the society. Awake so that we may make India a better place. Awake so that we may follow the ideals of Swamiji. Awake so that we may work with a determination. Awake so that we don’t stop working towards the goal of developed India.
My homage to the great man, the great soul, Swami Vivekananda.
